My only gripes with “Super Mario Maker”
(While this may sound like a journal entry, this is more of a rant, but it’s not too harsh, and I’m just simply expressing how SMM could be a perfect Mario game.)
As someone who grew up with Sonic the Hedgehog more than Mario, I am truly excited for Super Mario Maker. Being someone who really enjoys games with a level creator, it instantly caught my interest when it was revealed at E3 2014, and I’ve been excited for it ever since. From the different themes to the way amiibo functionality is being handled and the endless possibilities, it may just be just be a perfect Mario game…
If there were things that could be improved about it. Like every other game that’s deemed “Perfect”, nothing comes without its flaws. This is more of a personal flaw, I am NOT pleased with how you have to wait NINE DAYS in order for everything to be unlocked in the level creator. Nintendo said that they looked at Little Big Planet, another game with a create-play-share concept. In that game, you could unlock materials and other set-pieces needed to build your level in the level creator, and that was all you needed to do. Play the level, get the stuff. Why Nintendo didn’t do that is something we may never know.
Personally, if I were in charge of designing the game, I would have the unlock system like this:
Game Themes: Available from beginning
Ground & Underground motifs: Available from beginning
Ground & Underground Set-pieces: Available from beginning
Underwater motif: Play an underwater level from 10/100-Mario Challenge
Underwater Set-pieces: Play 3 underwater levels from Mario Challenges or Course World
Ghost House motif: Play a Ghost House level from 10/100-Mario Challenge
Ghost House Set-pieces: Play 3 Ghost House levels from Mario Challenges or Course World
Airship motif: Play an airship level from 10/100-Mario Challenge
Airship set-pieces: Play 3 airship levels from Mario Challenges or Course World
Castle motif: Play a castle level from 10/100-Mario Challenge
Castle set-pieces: Play 3 Castle levels from Mario Challenges or Course World
Another problem I have are the level themes themselves. I can understand that you got to have the core basics of a Mario game, such as Ground, Underground, Underwater, Castle, etc., but there should be some more themes in the game, such as Deserts, Tropical Islands, Snow Worlds, Skies & Lava/Bowser Worlds. But with the possibilities of DLC if Nintendo is interested, I feel that this problem may disappear.
If these problems of mine were solved, I feel that this may be the best 2D Mario game yet.
